Having a fruit smoothie is a very simple and easy way to provide your body with a bunch of nourishing vitamins and minerals. All they require is a blender, a base such as milk or yogurt and a complementary mixture of fruit. Here are a few benefits that can be found from a fruit smoothie…
Vitamins and Minerals
Fruit is a very wide food base which means that we have six categories to choose from that contain an abundance of vitamins and minerals. These categories are citrus, tropical, berries, pomes, drupes and melons. Citrus fruits such as grapefruit are high in vitamin C whilst berries such as strawberries contain important antioxidants. In addition to this, the tropical fruits such as kiwi contain potassium and the drupes such as cherries provide beta carotene which is important for vision. Finally, pomes such as apples and melons such as cantaloupe provide more vitamin C. With this information it is easy to understand why fruit smoothies offer a range of vitamins and minerals.
Fibre
Drinking just one fruit smoothie can help us on our way to consuming the daily recommended amount of fibre, which is 25g for women and 38g for men. For example, just one serving of fruit contains 2-4g of fibre alone and if we mix several types of fruit into a smoothie, we are easily going to hit the goal above each day. Fibre that is found in fruit aids slow digestion and helps to lower cholesterol which is why we are recommended to consume a certain amount every day.
