From controversial views to Celine Dion’s emotional comeback, the Paris Olympic Games have officially begun. We are just one week into the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, and it has been showstopping so far. From diving to mountain biking, it has been eventful so far.
Let’s recap on what happened at the opening ceremony because there is a lot to unpack.
This opening of the Olympics was the first ceremony ever held outside of a stadium, truly a moment in history! The ceremony followed a trail through Paris from the river Seine to the Eiffel Tower, this event broke the norm of a traditional format that we usually see at the Olympics. With wacky and creative performances left, right, and centre, it was one not to be missed.
We started off strong with an introduction from the ever so talented Lady Gaga. She opened the show with an extravagant performance of “Mon Truc en Plumes” by Zizi Jeanmarie. She dressed in black as her dancers wafted pink pom poms around her. It was very entertaining and the perfect start to the show.
Next, we had metal band Gojira bringing a weird yet wonderful performance with pyrotechnics and headless figures representing Marie Antoinette. It was bold, fiery, and definitely stirred some media opinions.
After more performances from Aya Nakamura and Juliette Armanet, it was time for a very emotional and special return of Celine Dion.
After 4 years of being away from the stage, Celine returned to the spotlight. She revealed her diagnosis of Stiff Person Syndrome, more commonly known as SPS, over a year ago which has affected her vocal cords, leaving her unable to sing. It’s a heartbreaking but rare autoimmune neurological disease, but after being so resilient, she was back doing what she does best.
It was a perfect way to officially open the Olympic Games in Paris. We cannot wait to spend our summer getting fit and healthy while watching sports! This leaves us with one final sentence, let the games begin!
